Audi A6 2.4 detailing
I have been commissioned to detail this mechanically sound but visually scruffy Audi A6, dating back from 1999. A high spec 4 door sedan, built like a tank. Powered by a V6 2.4 liter petrol engine with 160 horses on tap, it will definitely get you to your board meeting on time. After fifteen years of normal use and regular automatic car washing, it was in great need of a good detailing session.
This is what these automatic car wash systems do to your car’s paint after so long. It was scuffed all over, making it look dull, almost mat. It required some great care to bring it back to life…
It all starts with a good scrub using a high-pressure washer, some automotive shampoo and a micro-fiber mitt. You wouldn’t believe how much dirt came loose after that one step. All the door seams, boot and bonnet lids, followed by the engine bay were also cleaned at this stage. This step requires a soft brush, a specially formulated de-greaser and some patience.
Afterwards, when all has been dried off thanks to a silicone blade and absorbent microfiber towel, the decontamination really starts. A lot of automotive clay has been used, pulling the embedded impurities off the car and readying the clear coat for the first stage of polishing.
It used to be so dull, and now has retrieved its original shine. So satisfying, wouldn’t you think?
Using my favourite random-orbit polishing machine, I undertook the first pass. A second and a third were necessary, gradually moving up to finer polishing compounds, slowly brightening the dull paint work. Step by step, the colour came back to life before my
A last pass, with the « Diamond finish » polishing disc and compound, revived this Audi’s deep shine. It looks as though it just left the showroom!
Finally, I waxed the whole surface of the car by hand, with a specially formulated wax containing carnauba extracts. All the windows were treated with a hydrophobic product. Now, water just sheets off the whole car in a very satisfying manner. This will avoid grit to cling onto the car for a while, although a hand wash-and-wax is recommended at least once a month to keep this shine.
The depth of the original colour really stands out again.
By asking the owner of this car what he thought of it upon delivery, he was lost for words at first. His general expression gave it away fast enough…
If you ask me, I quite enjoyed this challenge, and I am extremely happy with the result. I was entrusted with a sad, grimy car, and returned it as if it had just rolled out of the dealership. The face of the owner was priceless to see, and even though I went to bed aching that day, it was well worth it.
If you would like me to assess what needs to be done to revive your car, I would be glad to do so. Just give me a call on +32(0)486/549.826, and we will take it from there.
