Lotus Esprit Series I

Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro as a replacement for the Europa, this iconic slice of British engineering is definitely a great asset to complete any collection of rare cars. This model hit the market in 1976, and was made popular by its appearance in the James Bond film « The Spy Who Loved Me », in 1977. Lotus went on producing the Series II from 1978, making this a highly desirable item for collectors.

The engine displaces 2 liters, and lays down a healthy 160 bhp. Weight is kept under the 1000 kilo mark, thanks to a tubular steel frame, covered by a fiberglass body.

The transaxle 5 speed manual gearbox is common to both Citroën SM and Maserati Merak, featuring inboard brakes.

Here is what we know about this particular example:

This Lotus Esprit left the assembly line on December 1977, being number 322 out of the 894 units ever produced. It was then delivered to its first owner in the USA in 1978.

In 2015, this car came back to Europe via a private seller. The number of previous owners is unknown, although it has a clean title. All formalities and import duties have been taken care of by its actual owner.

It is delivered in its original colour, and has never been repainted. The chassis is in excellent condition.

Enginewise, it has had a full rebuild, and only covered about 50 miles since then. The whole suspension system and electrics have also been entirely reconditioned.

The interior has been well maintained.

Spare Wolfrace wheel and original repair kit are present.

If you would like to drive an icon of the seventies, this would be the one. It is uncertain how many of these Series I remain on the roads to this day, making this a particularly rare opportunity.

All that is left to do with this one: enjoy it and love it.

Current market value analysis:

Valuation for an Esprit of this standard has been rising slowly but constantly in the past few years, although a sudden jolt in the market practically doubled its value after the summer of 2015.

It is not too late to get yourself a significant piece of history at an affordable price, but expect them to rise some more over the coming years.
